Frequently Asked Questions

Q: 1)What does the V.D.P. really do and accomplish on the spine?

A: The V.D.P. incorporates the flexion – distraction technique in a hand-held instrument, eliminating the need for awkward, hard to master and expensive tables. The V.D.P. has pre-setting, which eliminates the mistake of opening the posterior elements of the involved vertebrae too much. This can enhance and make the disc lesion worse. The V.D.P. offers tremendous precision and control with each application. Doctor of Chiropractic can safely separate only the posterior aspects of the involved vertebrae.

Q: 2) Are there any studies that have been done to verify that the V.D.P. does what it is suppose to do?

A: Yes, there were fluoroscopy studies done in 1998 that did indeed show the V.D.P. does open up the posterior elements of the involved vertebrae while keeping the anterior portion of the involved vertebrae stationary. There are also a multitude of pre and post treatment MRIs taken that do show the disc lesion has retracted. There are also digitalized MRIs that show this. The initial findings were published in the peer-reviewed Journal, Chiropractic Technique in 1999. (See under Research Section)

Q: 3) Are there any Chiropractors currently using the V.D.P. in their every day practices?

A: There are thousands of sets of the V.D.P. being used by Chiropractors in all parts of the world where Chiropractic is part of the health care program. From the United States to Canada, to the Orient, Mexico, South Africa and many others.

Q: 4) What conditions are the V.D.P. used on?

A: The V.D.P. works on the two main causes of spinal pain and their origin. Research has shown that spinal pain comes from two main causes: The facet joint or the annular fibers of the disc. The V.D.P. can open any jammed facets as well as open up the posterior elements of the vertebrae while keeping the anterior portion of the involved vertebrae stationary.

This can create a hydrostatic pressure change within the nucleus pulposis of the involved disc, which can draw the herniated portion of the disc back to its normal anatomical boundary. It can also be used on any joint where compressive forces are involved – i.e. rib head subluxations. It is also being used on major contracted muscles where it decreases the myospasm which can be affecting the spine, and the muscles it is associated with – i.e. gluteus maximus.

It is also quite useful with Seniors who may not have a great deal of pain, but have either lost flexibility, or want to maintain what they have recovered.

It is a very safe and effective way to mobilize the spinal segments, potentially facilitating remodeling of fibrotic changes in the joints and improving imbibition in the IVD.
